1. Gel Works as a Layered System
A professional gel manicure is not just one product. It is a complete structure made up of multiple layers:
- Natural nail
- Base gel or builder layer
- Color gel
- Top coat
Each layer can have different levels of flexibility, hardness, thickness, and curing behavior.
For the finished manicure to perform well, these layers need to work together as a system.
If one part of the structure behaves very differently from the others, stress may develop during everyday wear and eventually appear as cracking.
2. Application Thickness Matters
Highly pigmented colors and magnetic gels can contain a high concentration of pigments or magnetic particles.
Applying these products too thickly may make proper curing more difficult, especially when using highly opaque shades.
Instead of relying on one heavy coat, controlled thin layers generally provide more consistent curing and a more stable finished structure.

3. Check Your Curing

If a very rigid gel structure is applied over a highly flexible natural nail, repeated movement can place additional stress on the enhancement.

5. Look at the Top Coat Too
The color gel is not always the source of visible cracking.
Top coats also vary in hardness and flexibility.
A very hard top coat combined with more flexible layers underneath may behave differently during wear than a system designed with more similar flexibility throughout the structure.
When troubleshooting, consider the entire product combination rather than evaluating the color gel alone.
6. How to Troubleshoot Cracking
If fine cracks appear after several days, review the application step by step:
Check the natural nail.
Is it thin, flexible, damaged, or naturally strong?
Check the structure.
Was enough support created for the client's nail condition?
Check the color application.
Were the layers thin and even?
Check curing.
Was the correct lamp used for the recommended curing time?
Check the product combination.
Are the base, color, builder, and top coat working well together?
Look for a pattern.
Is the issue happening with one client, one shade, one product combination, or repeatedly across multiple applications?
That pattern can provide useful information about where to investigate next.
7. When Could It Be a Product Issue?
Technique should not automatically be blamed either.
A possible product or manufacturing issue should be investigated when there are unusual signs such as unexpected separation or texture changes, inconsistent curing despite correct application, abnormal performance across multiple clients, or the same problem repeatedly occurring with the same batch or product under controlled conditions.
If you suspect a product issue, document the product, batch information where available, lamp used, curing time, application method, and photos of the result.
This makes troubleshooting much more useful for both the nail professional and the supplier.
